Cross-Drilled brake rotors are usually equipped on high-end vehicles from car manufacturers. This type of high performance brake rotors are originally developed from racing to reduce heat as overheating on brakes is the worst enemy of good braking performance. Lower operating temperature also prolongs service life by an average of 15%. The cross-drilled holes on our brake rotors also provide better dissipation of water on wet pavement, thus offer better braking performance in any weather conditions. Many users also found improvement on the appearance of their vehicles after installing our cross-drilled brake rotors.The holes on the brake rotors provide a channel for the brake dust to escape which reduces brake dust accumulation on your beautiful sport wheels. ⇒ I cannot find any type of brake rotors with slots (slotted brake rotors and slotted & drilled rotors) on CanadaMotorParts.com, why is that?
Slotted brake rotors are for competition usage and not recommended for normal street drive. Since most of our customers use their vehicles for normal daily driving so we do not put them on our website. However, they can be specially ordered, please contact us by phone or email if slotted brake rotors are needed. Slotted brake rotors consume brake pads quicker than other brake rotors and the purpose is to remove the glaze from brake pads formed under competition environment in order to maintain proper friction between brake pads and brake rotors. However, glazed brake pads surface rarely forms under normal driving conditions so the slots on the rotors are not necessary and become a negative feature instead when using on streets. Also, with the slots on the rotor, there wouldn’t be enough space to place adequate amount of drill holes and heat dissipation would greatly reduced.
⇒ Are any modifications necessary to fit my vehicle?
No modifications or alterations are needed in order to install our products to your vehicles. All parts are designed to fit like OEM parts. However, for your own safety, please have the parts installed by licensed auto technicians.
⇒ What type of brake pads should be used with your cross-drilled rotors?
We recommend using MagnumBrakes ceramic brake pads with our cross-drilled brake rotors. Our specially formulated ceramic brake pads provide better friction and heat resistance. They also last 15% to 20% longer than OEM brake pads thus reducing the frequency of brake services. However, other high quality brake pads may also be used such as original or high quality brake pads from other manufacturers may also be used.
⇒ Does your brake pads produce brake dust? I do not want my wheels to get dirty within days.
When brakes are applied, brake lining wears off and creates metal dust. While dust from the brake pads is normal, but they affect the look of your vehicle by covering the wheels and sometimes difficult to clean. Excessive brake dust may affect braking by reducing friction between brake pads and rotors. Our brake pads are made of linings that are less likely to stick on wheels when they become dust form when comparing with factory brake pads. When use with cross-drilled rotors, the brake dust problem would further reduce as the drilled holes provide a channel for the brake dust to escape and less likely to build up on the wheels, and the result is consistent friction between pads and rotors which is a major element for predictable braking.

While all types of automotive parts are important to your vehicle , brake parts are definitely one of the most important sectors when it comes to safety. At MagnumBrakes we built our products under strictest quality control, but installation of our products must be precisely done for expected result. We recommend our products to be installed by licensed professionals. There are a few tips when it comes to installation of brake rotors and brake pads.
Brake rotors must be replaced for the complete axle. All nuts and bolts including calipers, lock nuts, wheel nuts, etc must be torqued to the specified torque set by manufacturer with the correct order. All contact surfaces must be cleaned and free of grease or dirt. Contact surface between brake rotors and hubs must be level and free of dirt or obstacles such as oxidation or metal residual. Check brake calipers condition including protective caps, sliders, pistons and guide elements and ensure the moving parts move freely and lubricate with industry standard lubricants if necessary. Please also check wheel bearing operation and play, and also the suspension parts to ensure they are in good working order, as failure of these parts may cause premature wear and tear on brake components, causing unexpected damage and loss of braking effectiveness.
⇒ What are the run-in procedures for new brake parts?
Violent or shock-braking should be avoided during the first 300 km of travel after the change of the brake rotors and brake pads.
Through a moderate run-in, a gradual warming of the brake rotors is performed without creating a heat shock and the friction surfaces of brake rotors and brake pad are aligned to each other.
Perform at least 30 brake applications from a medium velocity (approx. 100 km/h) with a moderate deceleration (maximum braking time 3 seconds) down to a velocity of initially 50 km/h, and after about half of the braking cycles were performed down to 25 km/h. Hereby letting the brake rotor cool down for approx. 3 min. between the brake cycles through the motion airflow.
If these instructions are not complied with, MagnumBrakes shall not honour any warranty claims, if this non-compliance causes damage to the product or damages/harm to third parties. Furthermore, a warranty will also not be provided if damages and/or defects occur that are attributable to intensive use and/or individual driving behaviour and/or were caused by non-intended use!
⇒ Noises, pulsating brake pedals
Noise: Squeaking noises are not caused by brake rotors. Although many cases are caused by brake pads, but our brake pads are made of material that minimizes resonance so when noise is experienced while braking, please check other possibilities such as:
- Installation: If brake pads and brake rotors are not aligned properly, they do not harmonize to each other and brake noise could be produced and affecting friction thus affecting braking performance.
- If other than MagnumBrakes brake pads are installed with our brake rotors, please ensure that the pads are high quality. There are a lot of brake pads using inferior frictional material or not manufactured to the exact specifications and there is nothing can be done to prevent these brake pads from producing squeal noise
- Another cause of braking noise can be caused by bad bearing or hub assembly which cannot provide a stable rotation on the brake rotors, the brake pads and brake rotors can never wear evenly and eventually causing noise.
- It is quite common to have foreign material jammed between brake pads and brake rotors and causing noise with or without applying the brakes.
⇒ Brake Rotors Warpage
If vibrations occur under thermal load, the cause is often a “warped brake rotor”. If the measurement of the brake rotor thickness also delivers differing values, the following diagnosis will be regarded as confirmed: Brake rotor bent, brake rotor “wobbles”, brake rotor non-circular, brake rotor warped, etc.
But the actual cause of the above stated phenomenon is a different one:
State-of-the-art brake pads are designed for adhesive friction. During a correct run-in braking of the brake rotor/pad system a very thin, homogeneous layer of brake pad material is formed through a diffusion processes, on the friction surfaces of the brake rotor. Thus there are two friction surfaces (brake rotors and pad) which in the marginal zone more or less consist of the same material (particles); a shifting may occur in both directions (diffusion). Thus, the chemical bonds between casting and pad materials can break apart or develop new. This process takes place continuously since there is a smooth transition threshold between the friction surfaces of the brake rotors and brake pad.
Failure to observe the brake-in process as well as a non-observance of the run-in phase will cause the formation of uncontrollable and uneven deposits of friction material on the braking surfaces which will result in a partial thermal over stressing of the braking surface. The irregular deposits, which protrude from the surface of the rotor will be warmer than the surrounding cast iron. During each contact (once per revolution) of the brake pad with the leading edge of a deposit will increase the temperature at this point. At a temperature between 650° C and 700° C, the cast iron under such a deposit will transition to cementite, and deposits of very hard iron carbide (Fe3C) will form in the crystal lattice of the cast iron. Under very high mechanical and thus thermal loading of the brake, this process is facilitated even more – causing an escalation effect. With an increasing temperature, the cementite will build up and simultaneously penetrate deeper into the brake rotor material. Ultimately this process will lead to the above described symptoms, such as rubbing, beating or pulsation of the brake. This can only be remedied through an exchange of the brake rotors and brake pads.
It should be noted that the actual cause is not due to a faulty rotor. The process described above set into motion through assembly errors, failure to observe the run-in regulations, etc. which damage the originally flawless brake rotors.
